Gilmore: No fire-sale of State assets

22/02/2012 - 09:38

The Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore has said the Government is "not flogging the family silver" but taking a prudent and pragmatic approach to the sale of State assets.

This morning, the Public Expenditure and Reform Minister Brendan Howlin will outline what assets the Government intends to sell and how much it hopes to make from them.

The non-network assets of the ESB and Bord Gais will be the most valuable, but others on the list will be the remaining stake in Aer Lingus and the country's forests.

Eamon Gilmore said the Government will not be rushed into anything and he is adamant some of the money raised will be used for job creation.

The Tánaiste said: "We are mindful of the fact that no State asset will be sold in a fire-sale situation.

"What we have to do is ensure that the State gets the maximumn value for anything that is sold and then that we are enabled to maximise the use of the proceeds to reinvest in the economy."
